With the new school year fast approaching many of us are excited to go back to high school and university, but many others would rather keep the summer vacation a little longer. For those who are dealing with ADD/ADHD, the school year is a long and challenging journey.

The brain is an organ requiring a lot of energy. In order to ensure the proper functioning of the brain we need to provide it with the appropriate nutrition, which it gets through the bloodstream. Circulation problems can harm the brain’s functioning and lead to concentration difficulties, headaches, migraines, and even lead to a bad mood.

One effective way to improve the situation is to start using the Ginkgo Biloba herb. Ginkgo Biloba is also known as “the tree of life” and originates in Japan and China. The Ginkgo leaves have been used in Chinese traditional medicine to improve memory and keep a ‘sharp’ mind. The Ginkgo tree is a strong and durable tree that can live for thousands of years.

Ginkgo Biloba has gained its reputation in the Western world due to its positive effects on blood circulation. The Ginkgo leaves contain active substances that are known to improve circulation and increase oxygen flow to various tissues and organs in the body, especially the limbs and the brain. Some studies have shown a positive effect on cognitive functioning (memory, thinking, concentration) in those that have taken a Ginkgo Biloba extract. The reason for this positive effect is probably due to the herb’s ability to improve blood flow to the brain, as well as its antioxidant properties.

Studies that have focused on the positive effect of the Ginkgo leaves on mental health had interesting findings as well. One of the studies found that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder, and that have taken Ginkgo Biloba, had experienced some relief, as compared with the control group taking a placebo. It seems that the Ginkgo herb is effective in at least some of the cases, but there is no conclusive evidence that taking Ginkgo Biloba is beneficial in all cases of ADD/ADHD and further research is needed.
