Heatwaves, night sweats and mood swings are just part of the less agreeable symptoms that occur to women during menopause, so how can you still improve your quality of life and get through menopause easily?

מהם תסמיני גיל המעבר?

The transitional age is a natural and continuous transitional phase in every woman’s life. Hormonal changes start in a woman’s body around the age of 50, which include a decrease in feminine hormone production – estrogen and progesterone – also stopping menstruation as a result. This transitional period is accompanied by less agreeable symptoms that could lower one’s quality of life. So, how does one go through those symptoms and this period in one piece?

What are the symptoms of menopause?

One usually experiences heatwaves during menopause, which wash over the body and can be accompanied by excessive perspiration. Once the heatwave dissipates one may experience a sense of cold accompanied by chills; this might occur during the day or at night.

In addition to heatwaves, mood swings, fatigue and sleep deprivation, retaining water, weight gain and more could also occur during menopause. Also, the lack of progesterone production during menopause, one of its roles being maintaining bone integrity, causes osteoporosis in 40% of all women. Osteoporosis leads to a decrease in bone density and the weakening of bones over time, which raises the possibility of fractions among post-menopausal women.

Menopause – this too shall pass.

Remember, menopause is not a disease, it’s a natural phase in life, that will eventually pass. Therefore, you should first of all be patient, breathe deeply and relax. However, the symptoms that come with this phase might disrupt your life and affect your daily routine. How can you cope? By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a few natural solutions, it’s possible to safely alleviate the symptoms so that any menopausal woman could feel at her best.

What are the natural courses of treatment for menopause symptoms?

Proper diet and healthy eating habits – eating properly and healthily is important at any age. During menopause it’s recommended to avoid heat inducing foods such as spicy foods, a high intake of caffein and hot drinks that can worsen the heatwaves. It’s also important to make sure to drink enough fluids in order to maintain a regular balance of fluids in your body, in order to prevent dehydration. Drinking also contributes to skin care.

Engaging in regular physical activity – studies have shown that regular, enjoyable physical activity improves bodily and mental functions! In addition, physical activity strengthens the muscles, pelvic floor and skeletal system.

Medicinal herbs – many women choose to take phytoestrogen active herbs. There are many herbs that contain estrogen-like materials called phytoestrogens – plant-bases components that are structurally similar to estrogen. They have a balancing affect in cases of estrogen deficiency or surplus, according to modern day herbology, due of their similar structure. Phytoestrogens have the ability to bond with estrogen receptors and decrease side effects common in menopause and related to low estrogen levels. The use of phytoestrogen herbs is common in western herbology even when estrogen levels are high and have a balancing affect thanks to their ability to link with receptors and block the estrogen’s bonding to its receptors.

These herbs are found in different nutritional supplements that combine herbal complexes such as red clover, chaste tree and black cohosh, known for their mild phytoestrogen activity. These plants are known for their ability to balance the female bodily and some even have a ‘cooling’ affect.

It’s advisable to choose dietary supplements that have been clinically tried and have shown improvement and alleviation of menopausal symptoms such as heatwaves and night sweats.
